Algeria is set to host a coordination meeting in the coming months for stakeholders involved in the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2 Corridor) project. The initiative aims to transport green hydrogen produced in Algeria to several European countries.
The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, will discuss mechanisms for implementing this major project, which represents a significant shift in the sector. The gathering will bring together representatives from Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany to coordinate the necessary steps for the project, which is expected to bolster the regional energy transition and reinforce Algeria’s central position in the energy market.
This project complements the undersea power line intended to export decarbonized Algerian electricity to Italy. Studies for this venture, managed by Sonelgaz, Sonatrach, and the Italian company Eni, are reportedly progressing at an accelerated pace.
On the continental level, Sonelgaz is preparing to launch power plant construction projects in Burkina Faso and Mozambique. These projects will follow a model similar to the power plant currently under construction in Niamey, Niger. The Algerian group plans to share its expertise with African partners through specialized training and the establishment of a “material bank” to supply these projects with locally manufactured equipment and spare parts.
Regarding solar energy initiatives, the implementation of the 15,000-megawatt program by 2035 is proceeding steadily. The first phase, involving the construction of stations across several provinces with a total capacity of 3,200 megawatts, has already been launched. Several of these stations, with a combined capacity of 1,480 megawatts, are expected to enter service during 2026.
Current progress reports indicate that the completion rate has reached 93% at the 200 MW Tendla station in El M’Ghair, 86% at the 200 MW El Ghrous station in Biskra, and 76% at the 300 MW Folia station in El Oued. Additionally, the 150 MW Kharga Sidi Nadji station in Biskra has reached 62% completion, while projects in Ouled Djellal, Abadla in Bechar, and M’Sila have reached the 50% mark.
