The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine Mehdi Walid, chaired a workshop on Tuesday at the ministry’s headquarters to present and study the new draft agricultural orientation law.
In his speech, Yacine Walid explained that the new agricultural orientation law follows the directives of the President of the Republic, who ordered its review during a Council of Ministers meeting. The law defines the general principles of public policies for the agricultural sector in Algeria.
The minister added that this law also aims to implement the recommendations of the National Sessions for Modernizing the Agricultural Sector held last February. One of the objectives was to involve various stakeholders in the agricultural sector to create a new vision based on modernization and technology.
Yacine Walid emphasized that this law enables the agricultural sector to support various actors in achieving food sovereignty goals.
The minister highlighted the law’s objectives, including strengthening national food sovereignty, preserving local genetic resources, reforming the support and subsidy system, establishing new and effective regulatory mechanisms, simplifying administrative procedures, and modernizing agricultural governance.
He further noted that other goals include accelerating digital and technological transformation, structuring value chains, and enhancing private investment to develop professional organizations. It also aims to encourage public-private partnerships, ensure sustainable management of natural resources, and professionalize farmers and breeders through continuous training and agricultural extension.
The final goal, the minister added, involves an integrated system for managing agricultural risks, which includes agricultural insurance—a key priority for the ministry at this time.
