Meta Imposes Restrictions on Content for Teenagers Following Global Regulatory Pressure

Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that it will block more content accessible to teenagers on Facebook and Instagram. This decision follows global regulatory pressure to limit content that could be harmful, as reported by Reuters.

The company plans to implement stricter content control restrictions for teenagers on these platforms and will also limit additional search terms on Instagram. These measures aim to make it harder for teenagers to access sensitive content, including topics related to suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders, especially when using features like “Search” and “Explore” on Instagram.

Meta stated that the protection measures, set to be implemented in the coming weeks, are designed to align content with the appropriate age group. This move reflects Meta’s response to growing scrutiny in the United States and Europe. Allegations suggest that its apps are addictive and have played a role in worsening the mental health crisis among young people.

In October, prosecutors in 33 U.S. states, including California and New York, filed lawsuits against the company. They accused Meta of repeatedly misleading users about the risks of its platforms. In Europe, the European Commission has requested information about Meta’s measures to protect children from illegal and harmful content.

The regulatory pressure intensified following testimony by a former Meta employee before the U.S. Senate, accusing the company of being aware of harassment and other harms faced by teenagers on its platforms but failing to address these issues adequately.
