Water Resources: Derbal Stresses Improving the Quality of Service Provided to Citizens

Minister of Irrigation Taha Derbal emphasized the necessity of adopting a forward-looking vision in planning and modern management of the sector to increase efficiency and improve the quality of public service provided to citizens.

During a working visit to the province of Bouira on Saturday, the Minister issued several instructions, including accelerating the pace of ongoing projects to improve public water services and respond to citizens’ aspirations.

The Minister ordered the diversification of water supply sources, particularly by supporting the province’s connection to the Tighremt seawater desalination plant in Bejaia and the Cap Djinet 2 plant in Boumerdes. This aims to ensure a sustainable water resource that is less affected by climate changes impacting traditional water sources.

Derbal also directed efforts toward reusing treated wastewater as a secondary, non-conventional water resource for agricultural irrigation, while emphasizing the importance of sanitation facilities in protecting public health and the environment.

He recommended respecting the hierarchy of priorities when registering new operations to ensure that investments are directed toward projects with a direct impact on improving public service.

The Minister confirmed that the irrigation sector will continue to support the developmental dynamics in Bouira, in line with the strategy to enhance water security and support local development across various provinces of the country.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Minister praised the efforts made by those in charge of public water services in the province and the recorded improvement in drinking water supply, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, thanks to increased supplies from dams and the rehabilitation of several wells.
