Parliament to Vote on Constitutional Amendment Project on Wednesday

Both chambers of Parliament will meet next Wednesday at the Palace of Nations in Club des Pins, Algiers, to approve the project containing the constitutional amendment.

A parliamentary source stated that members of the People’s National Assembly and the Council of the Nation received a text message today informing them of the meeting scheduled for next Wednesday evening.

The same source added that a meeting of the bureaus of the People’s National Assembly and the Council of the Nation will take place on Monday to discuss the project, which includes technical amendments, and refer it for a vote during Wednesday’s session.

Last January, the Presidency of the Republic organized a seminar supervised by Prime Minister Saifi Gharib, where the Director of the President’s Office, Boualem Boualem, presented the technical amendment project. The project includes ten points, most notably the requirement to prove an educational level for presidential candidacy and setting the term of the President of the Council of the Nation at six years instead of three.

Following the passage of the technical constitutional amendment and the subsequent approval of the organic law project for elections and electoral districts, the President of the Republic is expected to convene the electorate before April 8 (90 days before the end of the current electoral term) to elect members of the People’s National Assembly.
