Former Minister Aziz Derouaz Suffers Health Setback

Abderrahmane Hammad, President of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee, has expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery to former Minister Mohamed Aziz Derouaz following a health setback.

In an official statement, Hammad extended his hopes for a quick recovery and a return to good health for the former Minister of Youth and Sports.

Born on November 10, 1950, in the Belcourt neighborhood of Algiers, Derouaz took over the leadership of the national handball team in 1979. He is credited with developing a golden generation in the history of the sport locally, raising the national team’s profile continentally and internationally by securing five consecutive African championships, an unprecedented feat.

Under his guidance, the national team also competed in two World Cup tournaments, asserting their presence among the world’s handball elite.

In addition to his sporting career, Derouaz entered the political arena by contesting the 1991 legislative elections. He later served as the Minister of Youth and Sports from June 1997 to December 1999. Most recently, he served as the Commissioner for the 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games, held in Oran in 2022.
