Preparations continue for the Pope’s visit

Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, began a working and inspection visit to the province of Annaba to review the readiness of major archaeological sites, most notably the “Hippo” archaeological site and its museum. This visit is part of the ongoing preparations for the upcoming visit of the Pope to the province. During this stop, the Minister oversaw the reopening of the site’s museum to the public following the completion of renovation and study works. She emphasized the global historical value of the rare artifacts housed in the facility, particularly the “Gorgon” piece and the unique statue of Victory.

In the context of strengthening the international dimension of national heritage, the Minister issued strict instructions to immediately begin preparing a comprehensive technical file to register the “Hippo” archaeological site on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a key part of the ancient “Augustinian Paths.” She also directed the creation of a specialized interpretation center for the legacy of Saint Augustine at the Hippo Museum to serve as a beacon for introducing this civilizational heritage, as part of a new investment project registered for the development of the site and museum.

The inspection visit also included the Basilica of Saint Augustine, located on Hippo Hill, which is one of the most prominent classified religious and historical landmarks. Minister Bendouda highlighted the significant symbolism of this monument, which blends Roman, Byzantine, and Moorish architectural styles. She stressed the importance of preserving these archaeological treasures and improving the conditions for receiving visitors and delegations in a manner that reflects Algeria’s cultural and civilizational standing.
