Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially received Pope Leo XIV on Monday at the Presidential Palace in Algiers, in a landmark diplomatic event marking the pontiff’s historic visit to Algeria.
President Tebboune and Pope Leo XIV posed together for an official commemorative photograph before representatives of national and international media gathered at the palace.
The Pope’s official visit to Algeria began earlier in the day following a formal invitation extended by President Tebboune, who personally received him upon his arrival at Houari Boumediene International Airport in a gesture underscoring the significance Algeria places on this high-level engagement.
The visit is seen as a powerful symbol of Algeria’s longstanding commitment to interfaith dialogue, peace, and its prominent role on the international diplomatic stage.
