Energy and Mines Minister Mohamed Arkab has affirmed that Algeria’s growing cooperation with oil-producing African countries, such as Nigeria, bolsters its position as a regional energy hub. In an interview with “Army” magazine’s February issue, Arkab highlighted Algeria’s flexibility in an unstable global market, establishing itself as a secure and reliable natural gas supplier.
Arkab elaborated on how Algeria’s geographical location in North Africa has made it a strategic supplier to the European continent. The increasing cooperation with African oil producers, including Nigeria in the Trans-Saharan Pipeline project, reinforces Algeria’s status as a regional energy center. This collaboration has enabled Algeria to attract new clients in Central and Eastern Europe, and its active role in international governmental organizations like the Gas Exporting Countries Forum and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries has enhanced its credibility among international energy partners, further supporting its energy position in the Mediterranean.
The minister also recalled the significant energy investments made by Algeria in recent years, which have boosted the national gas production capacity and export capabilities, allowing for a flexible and responsive supply to demand fluctuations. In this context, Arkab mentioned Sonatrach’s efforts to strengthen its production capabilities through overseas investments as part of partnership contracts in exploration and fuel production in neighboring countries like Libya, Mali, and Niger, planning to invest a total of $442 million between 2024 and 2028.
Furthermore, Arkab spoke about Algeria’s environmental efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the gas industry by cutting greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment will enhance the role and status of natural gas as an energy source that supports the energy transition and will contribute to maintaining the competitiveness of this resource.
