Algeria’s New Water Minister Launches First Cabinet Meeting, Sets Urgent Priorities for Drinking Water Supply

Algeria’s newly appointed Minister of Water Resources, Lounas Bouzekza, chaired his first official meeting this Sunday with senior ministry officials, directors-general of supervised institutions, and the Secretary-General of the Water Sector Federation.

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch, the minister expressed deep gratitude to the President of the Republic for the trust placed in him, and outlined a clear action plan for the sector.

Bouzekza stressed the urgent need for teamwork to address citizens’ concerns, particularly improving the continuity of safe drinking water across all regions of the country.

Key directives issued include preparing an emergency action plan ahead of Eid Al-Adha and the summer season, conducting a thorough diagnostic of sector shortcomings, and enhancing transparency with citizens during water outages.

The minister also called for rational management of both conventional and non-conventional water resources — including desalination and treated wastewater reuse — while combating waste, illegal connections, and accelerating ongoing infrastructure projects.
