Algeria’s Minister of Transport, Mohamed Habib Zahana, has announced that the country’s national airline, Air Algérie, will prioritize the southern regions in its network expansion plans.

Speaking at a public session of the National Assembly on Thursday, Zahana said that Air Algérie will begin receiving 15 new aircraft in 2025 as part of a program to address existing shortcomings and boost domestic air travel.

The gradual delivery of these aircraft will allow the airline to increase its flight frequency and expand its route network, particularly to the southern regions, in order to meet the needs of the population more comfortably.

Zahana also mentioned Air Algérie’s program to lease large and medium-sized aircraft in preparation for the summer and Hajj seasons.

In response to a question from MP Ahmed Bennai regarding the expansion of the Aboubakr Belkaid International Airport in Chlef, the Minister explained that a feasibility study for the project will be conducted, given its proximity to other airports with large capacities, such as those in Algiers and Oran.

The Minister of Transport also recalled that a study for the expansion and rehabilitation of the Chlef airport was previously completed in 2014 at a cost of 50 million dinars, and that the study was received in 2021.
