President of the France-Algeria Association, Ségolène Royal, has praised the new direction of bilateral relations between the two countries, citing key historical milestones including the May 8, 1945 massacres.
In an exclusive statement to dzwatch, Royal called on France to “stop imposing conditions” and abandon the logic of power imbalances, stressing that Paris must “speak as an equal with this great nation — Algeria.”
Royal highlighted the Pope’s recent visit to Algeria as a pivotal turning point, noting how President Tebboune’s reception and the Pope’s tribute to Algerian history at the Martyrs’ Memorial forced French authorities to “reconsider their position.”
She further urged France to advance long-pending files demanded by Algiers, particularly the case of a consular employee detained without trial — a decision she said must be reversed. Royal also called for resuming bilateral economic ties through “win-win partnerships built on equal footing.”
