Algeria’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Nassim Quaouia, warned that the dangerous escalation in the Middle East could lead the region and the world into a more perilous phase where matters spiral out of control, making it difficult to predict their shape and outcomes.

Speaking during a session of the Security Council following the Iranian-Israeli escalation, Ambassador Quaouia stated that Algeria is closely monitoring the developments in the region with deep concern and warns of grave consequences should the conflict in the Middle East escalate.

He urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid escalation, emphasizing that neither the region nor the world can endure another war.

In a strong statement, Ambassador Quaouia highlighted Algeria’s stance on the escalations in the region, referring to the warning issued by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Benjamia, during a Security Council session discussing the Israeli occupier’s attacks on the Iranian embassy building in Damascus earlier this month. He emphasized the danger of allowing the occupier’s behavior and arrogance to go unchecked in the region, stressing that such dangerous actions could drag the entire region into conflict.

Furthermore, he emphasized, “The Middle East is currently at a critical juncture that requires all international actors to prioritize wisdom to navigate through this precarious period towards safety.”

Ambassador Nassim Quaouia reiterated the importance of upholding the principles and objectives of the United Nations and adhering to international law to achieve international peace and security.

He added, “The policy of double standards, manipulating international law, and interpreting it inconsistently based on interests and whims threatens to undermine our international system based on the rule of law. We stand at a crossroads today; either adhere to international law without distortion or manipulation, or plunge into chaos and instability.”

In his remarks, the Algerian diplomat addressed the interconnected nature of the crises in the Middle East, emphasizing that the root causes of these crises, namely Israeli occupation, must be addressed.

He stressed that recent developments should not overshadow the central issue: the assault on the innocent Palestinian people in Gaza. He warned against using any pretext or cover for a ground attack on Rafah, emphasizing that any attack on Rafah is completely unacceptable and must be avoided to prevent catastrophic consequences for the region’s security and stability.

In order to calm tensions in the Middle East in the short term, he emphasized the necessity of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and putting an end to the brutal killing machine and collective punishment against the Palestinian people. He asserted that sustainable peace and security in the region, in the long term, can only be achieved by enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate and inalienable rights and ending the Israeli occupation of all Arab lands.

In conclusion, he stressed the Security Council’s responsibility to safeguard international peace and security and prevent further deterioration of the situation through an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, followed by serious efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem and end the Israeli occupation of all Arab lands.
