Algeria’s national campaign to collect Eid al-Adha animal hides has entered its seventh consecutive year, with officials telling dzwatch that the initiative is playing a transformative role in strengthening the country’s leather industry.
Miqdad Akoun, official at the Ministry of Industry’s studies and planning department, told dzwatch exclusively that the rate of usable hides collected has surged from just 16% in 2018 to 36% in 2025, with targets set to reach between 45% and 50% before year’s end — allowing half of all recovered hides to feed directly into national manufacturing chains.
The campaign is coordinated across multiple government ministries including Interior, Religious Affairs, Environment, Health, and Agriculture, alongside civil society organizations and Algeria’s Islamic Scouts movement.
Akoun emphasized that the strategy championed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is firmly anchored in achieving industrial sovereignty and reinforcing domestic production — a cornerstone of Algeria’s broader economic independence vision.
