The province of Tlemcen is gearing up for a highly productive agricultural season, with regional authorities projecting a total grain yield of over 998,000 quintals (nearly 1 million quintals) during the upcoming harvesting and threshing campaign. According to local agricultural services, the campaign is scheduled to officially launch this June.
Providing a breakdown of the anticipated output, Kamel Othmani, head of the production organization and technical support office at the Agricultural Services Directorate, revealed that the yield will consist of approximately 264,516 quintals of durum wheat, 100,863 quintals of soft wheat, 621,442 quintals of barley, and 11,267 quintals of oats.
This positive projection follows the cultivation of over 74,506 hectares of agricultural land across the province this season. The arable land has been strategically distributed, with barley leading at 48,328 hectares, followed by durum wheat at 16,158 hectares, and soft wheat at 8,177 hectares. Additionally, 1,742 hectares were dedicated to oats, and 100 hectares to triticale.
To ensure a seamless harvest, local authorities have mobilized extensive logistical support. This includes 210 harvesters, over 3,600 tractors, and 2,000 transport trucks. To accommodate the massive influx of grain, 22 collection points have been designated under the Cereals and Pulses Cooperative (CCLS) of Tlemcen, offering a total storage capacity of over 1.33 million quintals. This network is further bolstered by six newly integrated proximity intermediate storage centers, each capable of holding 50,000 quintals.
In tandem with logistical preparations, the Agricultural Services Directorate, in coordination with the Directorate of Forests and Civil Protection, has instituted robust preventive measures to protect crops from potential summer wildfires, safeguarding the province’s vital contribution to national food security.
