The number of Algerian students pursuing higher education in Russian universities has surged, with over 2,000 currently enrolled. This significant increase, described by Russia's Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Andrey Vladimirovich Omeltchuk, as a tenfold rise over the past decade, is attributed to enhanced academic cooperation and mutual recognition of university degrees between the two nations.
Algerian students in Russian universities
Russia has emerged as a prime educational destination for international students, attracting thousands annually due to its high-quality education, diverse specializations, and international accreditation of its institutions and degrees. Deputy Minister Omeltchuk highlighted Russia's commitment to strengthening its position as a global educational hub, particularly for Algerian students. This is being facilitated through expanded academic collaboration programs, increased scholarship offerings—currently at 100 per year—and the complete digitization of registration processes.
An agreement signed on January 30, 2025, concerning the mutual recognition of university certificates and academic qualifications has been a key driver in encouraging Algerian students to opt for Russian universities. Currently, 2,194 Algerian students are studying in Russia, a testament to the growing bilateral educational ties.
Globally, Russian universities host approximately 350,000 international students from 180 countries. Algerian students are pursuing a wide array of popular fields, including medicine, computer science, drone programming, artificial intelligence, engineering, management, software engineering, as well as forestry and environmental sciences.
