Algeria Accelerates Strategic Infrastructure Projects in Southwest Region Towards 2029

Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, presided over a pivotal coordination meeting in Algiers, focusing on the strategic development of southwestern Algeria. The sixth regional meeting, dedicated to the wilayas of Adrar, Tindouf, Béni Abbès, Béchar, and Timimoun, aimed to assess the progress of sector-specific programs and to map out future investment horizons through to 2029.

During the session, central ministry officials, directors of Public Works, and technical representatives from the concerned wilayas reviewed the advancement of projects slated for 2026, monitored the pace of ongoing operations, and deliberated on investment proposals for the years 2027, 2028, and 2029. A key emphasis was placed on structuring and strategic projects designed to enhance connectivity across the southwestern regions and bolster essential infrastructure.

The meeting also addressed the critical task of sanitizing the portfolio of sectoral investments, a move intended to refine project monitoring mechanisms and ensure the judicious use of public funds. Minister Djellaoui issued directives to guarantee the effective implementation of the established programs, stressing the importance of launching all projects scheduled for 2026 within the stipulated timelines and ensuring their completion aligns with defined objectives.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the priority to be given to projects with a direct impact on the economic and social development of these areas. He underscored the necessity of regular field monitoring to swiftly address any impediments that could hinder progress. Minister Djellaoui also advocated for a proactive approach to preparing future investment programs, rooted in a precise identification of the actual needs of the wilayas and designed to support the developmental momentum within these territories.

These regional meetings are part of a periodic coordination and evaluation framework initiated by the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure. Launched on May 19th, this series of encounters, concluding on June 3rd, seeks to comprehensively evaluate the execution status of various sector programs, enhance project management tools, and ultimately amplify the effectiveness of public investments nationwide.
