Tizi Ouzou, Algeria – Local authorities have clarified recent restrictions on forest access in the Tizi Ouzou province, assuring the public that popular tourist and hiking areas remain open to citizens. Moussa Haddad, the Conservator of Forests for the Tizi Ouzou wilaya, stated that the ordinance specifically targets "highly sensitive" forest perimeters, particularly those vulnerable to fires during the hot summer months. These restricted zones are identified through detailed mapping and are crucial for preventing wildfires.
Haddad emphasized that well-known tourist sites and hiking trails are not included in the access ban, which is in effect from May 1st to October 31st, 2026. He highlighted that hikers, often referred to as "friends and protectors of nature," are welcomed and encouraged to continue their activities, provided they adhere to safety guidelines. These include staying on marked paths and refraining from activities like bivouacking or barbecues that could pose fire risks.
The conservator further noted that knowledgeable hikers are considered valuable partners in environmental protection efforts and can even assist in rescue operations.
