Tizi Ouzou Reassures Public: Tourist Sites Remain Accessible Amidst Forest Area Restrictions

Tizi Ouzou, Algeria – Authorities in the Tizi Ouzou province have clarified that access restrictions in certain forest areas do not affect established tourist sites, aiming to dispel public confusion stemming from a recent decree.

Tizi Ouzou forest access clarification

Moussa Haddad, the conservator of forests for the Tizi Ouzou province, assured the public that hiking in known tourist areas remains permitted. He explained that the recent decree issued by the wali (governor) prohibits access only to "highly sensitive" forest perimeters, particularly during the hot season, to mitigate risks such as wildfires.

"There has never been a question of prohibiting hikes, based on the principle that these spaces are public and open to citizens within the framework of the rules and safety measures established by law," Haddad stated. The decree, effective from May 1 to October 31, 2026, outlines specific restrictions, including those concerning bivouacs, barbecues, and other activities that could spark fires.

Haddad emphasized that all tourist zones are accessible to citizens, including hikers, whom he considers "friends and protectors of nature." He urged adherence to designated trails and compliance with regulations. He further noted that hikers, often possessing intimate knowledge of the terrain and dedicated to environmental protection, are valuable partners, especially during rescue operations.

The sensitive areas targeted by the restrictions include forests of holm oak, which are particularly susceptible to fires. A detailed mapping of these perimeters has been developed by the relevant services, forming a crucial database for fieldwork.

This clarification has been welcomed by hiking enthusiasts who expressed relief on social media and reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with forest services in preventing and protecting natural spaces. The measure is part of broader efforts to enhance wildfire prevention and management strategies across the region.
