Algerian Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, highlighted on Monday in Algiers the significant strides Algeria has made in recent years to bolster its water security. These advancements are primarily driven by the execution of a new program endorsed by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which emphasizes the expansion of seawater desalination activities, alongside the optimization of traditional water resources.

Speaking at the opening of the 21st edition of the "SIO Polutec" International Exhibition for Water, Sanitation, and Environment Technologies and Services at the Palais des Expositions, Pin Maritimes, Derbal announced plans for the construction of three new desalination plants in western Algeria. These facilities, located in Tlemcen, Chlef, and Mostaganem, will each possess a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day. Crucially, these plants will also supply desalinated seawater to several inland provinces, including El Bayadh, Tiaret, Saïda, and Naâma, aiming to achieve water balance for their populations in the near future.
Derbal showcased the current network of 19 desalination plants operating across Algeria, boasting substantial production capabilities. Currently, 16 northern provinces benefit from desalinated seawater, supplemented by three inland provinces—Blida, Bouira, and Sidi Bel Abbès—which are part of the initial phase of expanded access.
Furthermore, the minister confirmed a recent surplus in water availability in the southern regions. This has been achieved through enhanced exploitation of groundwater, supported by demineralization stations in Tindouf and Tamanrasset, as well as a network of major water transfer systems that enable provinces experiencing shortages to meet their vital water needs.
The minister also received a briefing on the activities, achievements, and strategic projects of the Algerian Company for Water Desalination (Algérienne des Eaux de Désalinisation), a subsidiary of the Sonatrach group. He commended the company's pivotal role in reinforcing national water security and supporting governmental efforts to ensure sustainable water supply.
During the event, the Algerian Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) launched its innovative application, "Qatrat AI" (Drop AI). This AI-powered digital management tool for water networks is designed to enhance distribution efficiency, detect network faults, and provide early warnings for leaks, thereby ensuring the continuity of service.
The exhibition, running until June 4th, features 170 exhibitors from 16 countries and serves as a crucial platform for knowledge exchange and the showcasing of the latest technologies and solutions aimed at advancing the water sector and environmental protection.
