Algeria and Niger Forge Stronger Energy Ties with Three Key Memoranda of Understanding

Algeria and Niger have solidified their energy cooperation with the signing of three significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between subsidiaries of Algeria's national oil and gas company, Sonatrach, and Niger's national oil company, SONIDEP. The ceremony, held at Sonatrach's headquarters in Algiers, was overseen by Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Niger's Minister of Petroleum, Hassoumi Massaoudou.

These agreements underscore Algeria's commitment to bolstering South-South cooperation and fostering strategic partnerships, aligning with the directives of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to enhance economic and energy integration between the two nations. The MoUs cover several critical areas within the hydrocarbon industry.

The first MoU, signed between Sonatrach's geophysical subsidiary, ENAGEO, and SONIDEP, focuses on the acquisition and processing of seismic data within Niger. This initiative is poised to significantly support exploration efforts and the development of Niger's oil and gas resources.

Secondly, a joint venture company is set to be established through an MoU between Sonatrach's drilling subsidiary, ENFOR, and SONIDEP. This new entity will specialize in oil and gas drilling operations in Niger, aiming to enhance the technical and operational capacities of both companies and stimulate mining and petroleum activities in the country.

The third MoU, executed between Algeria's national company for the marketing and distribution of petroleum products, Naftal, and SONIDEP, aims to advance cooperation in the distribution of petroleum products in Niger. This includes the establishment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations and training programs. Furthermore, it paves the way for a joint venture dedicated to the manufacturing, formulation, storage, and distribution of bitumen, which will be instrumental in supporting infrastructure projects and economic development in Niger.

Both parties expressed that these agreements mark a new chapter in Algerian-Nigerien partnership within the energy sector, reflecting a mutual desire to expand collaboration and investment. They highlighted the intention to leverage Algeria's recognized expertise across the entire oil and gas value chain.

These accords also serve to implement a prior MoU between Sonatrach and SONIDEP, aimed at developing mutually beneficial joint projects, promoting technology transfer, and building capacity. This collaborative framework is expected to bolster economic development and reinforce the principles of African cooperation and solidarity.
