Algeria Issues Red Weather Alert as Extreme Heat Wave Continues Across Several Provinces
Algeria’s National Office of Meteorology (ONM) has issued a Level 3 Red Alert warning of the continued heat wave affecting several regions of the country, with temperatures expected to reach exceptionally high levels on Saturday.
According to the special weather bulletin, the highest alert applies to the provinces of Relizane, Chlef, Aïn Defla, Skikda, Annaba and El Tarf, where maximum temperatures are forecast to reach or locally exceed 48°C. The red alert is in effect from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., reflecting the significant health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
The meteorological authority also issued a Level 2 Orange Alert for another group of provinces, including Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbès, Saïda, Mascara, Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Médéa, Blida, Djelfa, M’Sila, Tizi Ouzou, Bouira, Sétif, Mila, Bordj Bou Arréridj, Constantine, Souk Ahras, Batna, Khenchela, Oum El Bouaghi and Tébessa.
In these provinces, maximum temperatures are expected to range between 44°C and 46°C, with the alert remaining in force until 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The heat wave also extends to the coastal provinces of Aïn Témouchent, Oran, Mostaganem, Tipaza, Algiers and Boumerdès. While temperatures in these areas are expected to range between 39°C and 41°C, southern parts of the provinces could experience temperatures reaching or exceeding 42°C to 44°C. These conditions are expected to persist through Sunday.
The National Office of Meteorology urged residents in the affected regions to exercise extreme caution, particularly during the hottest hours of the day. Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, staying well hydrated, limiting direct exposure to sunlight and paying particular attention to vulnerable groups, including children, older adults and people with chronic health conditions.
The Algerian authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation closely and are coordinating with the relevant services to ensure public safety. Citizens are encouraged to follow official weather updates and comply with precautionary advice issued by local authorities.
The latest alerts underscore the intensity of the current summer heat wave and highlight the importance of remaining vigilant as exceptionally high temperatures continue to affect large parts of Algeria.
