Algeria Issues Heatwave Warning as Temperatures Could Reach 47°C

Algeria’s meteorological services have warned that exceptionally high temperatures will continue to affect several northern provinces and areas in the northern Sahara through Saturday, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 47 degrees Celsius in some regions.

According to the weather bulletin issued on Thursday, temperatures of up to 46°C in the shade are expected to persist until Saturday in the provinces of Béjaïa, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba and El Tarf.

Meteorological services also warned of an intense heatwave affecting western and central parts of the country, where temperatures could reach 47°C in the shade through Friday.

The provinces concerned include Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbès, Saïda, Mascara, Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Relizane, Chlef, Aïn Defla and Tizi Ouzou.

Meanwhile, temperatures of up to 47°C are forecast to continue until Saturday across a wider group of inland provinces, including Blida, Médéa, Djelfa, Bouira, M’Sila, Bordj Bou Arréridj, Sétif, Mila, Constantine, Souk Ahras, Guelma, Khenchela, Batna, Oum El Bouaghi and Tébessa.

The prolonged heatwave comes as several Algerian provinces continue to face a heightened risk of forest and vegetation fires.

Civil Protection services remain on high alert, with significant human and material resources mobilized across the affected regions. Official figures released Thursday showed that Civil Protection units extinguished 107 of 138 fires recorded nationwide during the previous 24 hours.

Authorities have repeatedly urged citizens to remain vigilant during periods of extreme heat and to strictly observe preventive measures aimed at reducing health and fire-related risks. Civil Protection previously stressed the importance of respecting safety instructions during heatwaves affecting several provinces.

The authorities are maintaining close monitoring of weather and wildfire conditions as emergency services continue their operations across the country.
