France Records 5,764 Deaths During Severe June Heatwave

France’s national public health agency has reported 5,764 deaths during the severe heatwave that swept across the country between June 17 and July 2, 2026, marking the highest heat-related mortality toll recorded in France since the historic heatwave of 2003.

According to the agency, nearly half of the deaths occurred within just three days, between June 25 and 27, highlighting the exceptional intensity of the heatwave and its rapid impact on public health.

The prolonged and unusually early episode affected approximately 98.5 percent of the French population and extended across 92 departments. Its timing also coincided with a period of normal school and professional activity, increasing exposure to extreme temperatures and adding to the health consequences.

The latest figures underline the growing challenge posed by increasingly intense heatwaves in France. The country had already experienced a difficult summer in 2025, when authorities recorded around 5,700 heat-related deaths over the entire summer period, according to final figures released by the national health authorities.

France is now facing another period of extreme temperatures, with a third heatwave affecting parts of the country during July.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow preventive recommendations, particularly as weather conditions are expected to become increasingly challenging toward the end of the week.

Forecasts indicate that hot and dry winds could intensify, while exceptionally high temperatures and increasingly dry vegetation are raising additional concerns over health risks and the possibility of wildfires.

Officials have particularly emphasized the need to protect people most vulnerable to extreme heat, including elderly residents and individuals exposed to prolonged high temperatures.

The latest mortality figures once again highlight the serious public health consequences of extreme weather events and the importance of preparedness as France confronts increasingly frequent and intense periods of exceptionally high temperatures.
