Algeria Unveils AI-Powered University Reform and Targets 5,000 Innovative Products by 2030
Algeria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, announced an ambitious roadmap for the country’s universities during the National Universities Conference held on Saturday at the ministry’s headquarters.
Opening the meeting, Baddari said Algerian universities are entering a new era focused on becoming smart, entrepreneurial and innovation-driven institutions, in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy and strengthening the country’s scientific and technological sovereignty.
Among the flagship initiatives is the introduction of a personalized learning pathway powered by artificial intelligence. Students will be supported by an AI assistant capable of recommending courses based on their skills, interests and career goals. The ministry also plans to develop a large language model (LLM) for university lecturers, enabling them to automatically generate teaching materials, exercises and assessments, while AI will assist in evaluating students’ work.
Baddari also revealed the government’s objective of launching 5,000 Algerian innovative products on the national market by 2030 under the “Made in Algeria” label. Each product is expected to lead to the creation of a startup, micro-enterprise or university spin-off.
To accelerate innovation, the second edition of the ProtoMarket program will provide financial support for technology prototypes, while Algeria’s first university-based venture capital company and its first venture capital investment fund (FCPR) have been established, with four additional funds expected before year-end.
The minister further highlighted progress in internationalization, quality certification and student services, noting that five universities have obtained the ISO 9001:2015 certification, 77 university partnership agreements have been signed, and the Study in Algeria platform has attracted 1,500 international students from 34 countries. He also reported significant improvements in student housing and digital catering services, resulting in better services and substantial cost savings.
