Spain Declares National Emergency as Historic Wildfire Rages Near Madrid

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Saturday that saving lives remains the government’s top priority as firefighters battle a massive wildfire near Madrid, warning that bringing the blaze under control will be an extremely difficult task.

Speaking to reporters in one of the villages threatened by the fire, Sánchez stressed that the authorities’ main objective is to protect residents and safeguard populated areas from the advancing flames.

The wildfire, which has spread rapidly under extreme weather conditions, prompted Spanish authorities on Friday to declare that it had reached its peak intensity, making it impossible to extinguish immediately. Officials have instead focused on containing the fire and preventing it from reaching additional communities.

Spain has also declared a national state of emergency—the first such measure ever taken in the country because of wildfires—allowing the central government to mobilize additional resources and provide emergency funding to support firefighting and relief operations.

Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso described the disaster as the worst wildfire in the history of the Madrid region, explaining that two major fires had merged into a single blaze.

She attributed the unprecedented situation to a combination of exceptionally high temperatures and persistent strong winds, which have fueled the fire’s rapid spread and complicated firefighting efforts.

Emergency services remain on high alert as thousands of firefighters, supported by aircraft and ground crews, continue working to protect homes and critical infrastructure while authorities closely monitor weather conditions that could further influence the fire’s behavior.
