Death Toll Rises to 20 in Tragic Boumerdès Bus Accident

The death toll from a serious road accident in Algeria’s Boumerdès Province has risen to 20, while 38 other people were injured, according to the Civil Protection services.

Authorities said the figures remain preliminary and may increase as emergency teams continue their operations and assess the condition of those affected.

The Civil Protection mobilized extensive human and material resources to accelerate rescue efforts, provide medical assistance, and ensure that the injured were transported to nearby healthcare facilities.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb arrived at the scene accompanied by Director General of National Security Ali Badaoui and Boumerdès Governor Faouzia Naâma. The officials inspected the accident site and monitored the ongoing emergency response.

The accident occurred when a passenger bus veered off the Rahmoun–El Karma bypass road, overturned, and fell down a slope within the municipality and district of Boumerdès.

Emergency services worked to secure the area, assist the victims, and manage traffic around the site while the relevant authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The tragedy has prompted a large-scale response involving local officials, security services, medical teams, and Civil Protection units.

An investigation is expected to determine the factors that led to the accident, including possible road, vehicle, or operational causes.

The incident is among the most serious road accidents recorded in the region and has once again highlighted the importance of road safety, vehicle maintenance, and strict compliance with transport regulations.
