Algeria Marks National Army Day with Tribute to Armed Forces’ Role and Sacrifices

General Saïd Chengriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), extended his congratulations to all members of the armed forces on the occasion of the National Army Day, celebrated annually on August 4.

In a message released Tuesday by the Ministry of National Defense, Chengriha emphasized that this national day—established by the President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense—honors the crucial role played by the ANP, the successor of the National Liberation Army, in safeguarding Algeria’s sovereignty, security, and stability.

He described the occasion as a lasting badge of honor for members of the military institution and a symbol of the deep and enduring bond between the army and the Algerian people. According to him, this historic and sacred relationship has always been a cornerstone of national security and a shield against threats aimed at undermining the country’s progress.

Chengriha also recalled the army’s decisive role after independence, when it assumed its responsibilities in building the foundations of the Algerian state despite difficult conditions, limited resources, and the legacy of colonial destruction. Thanks to the sacrifices and dedication of its citizens, Algeria was able to rebuild and achieve significant progress on both continental and international levels.

He further praised the ANP’s ongoing modernization, highlighting improvements in operational readiness, defense capabilities, and technological development. He also commended the army’s efforts in combating terrorism and organized crime, attributing these achievements to the dedication of all personnel, particularly those stationed along the country’s borders.

On this occasion, Chengriha called for honoring the memory of all martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the national resistance, the War of Independence, and in the defense of Algeria’s security and stability.
