Algeria Calls for Unified Arab-Islamic Action to Protect Jerusalem

Algeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, stressed that protecting Jerusalem requires a coordinated Arab and Islamic effort built around three key and interconnected priorities.

Speaking at the ministerial meeting in Amman dedicated to supporting Jerusalem and its holy sites, Attaf explained that the first priority lies in intensifying political and diplomatic action to counter all unilateral measures aimed at altering the city’s historical character, legal status, and demographic composition. He also emphasized the need to prevent the relocation of diplomatic missions to Jerusalem and reaffirm that the city remains the capital of the State of Palestine.

The second priority, he noted, is preserving the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites. In this regard, Attaf highlighted the importance of supporting the Hashemite custodianship over these sites, considering it a key factor in safeguarding their identity and ensuring freedom of worship.

As for the third priority, the minister underscored the importance of strengthening the resilience of Palestinians in Jerusalem. This includes supporting Palestinian institutions in the city and enabling them to continue their national role, thereby preserving the Palestinian presence and protecting the city’s cultural and religious identity.

Attaf further warned that the Palestinian cause, particularly the issue of Jerusalem, is currently at a critical and decisive stage. He described it as a real test of the ability of Arab and Islamic countries to elevate their joint action to meet the scale of challenges and violations facing the city and the broader Palestinian national project.

He concluded by calling for stronger, more unified efforts that match the gravity of the situation and respond to the aspirations of the Palestinian people.
