Algeria’s Digital Economy Thrives with Significant E-Payment Growth

Algeria's digital economy is experiencing a period of robust expansion, demonstrated by a significant increase in both online commerce platforms and electronic payment activities. By the end of the first half of 2026, the number of web-merchants integrated into Algeria's internet payment platform surpassed the symbolic threshold of 1,000, reaching 1,004. This figure represents a notable 55% increase compared to 644 web-merchants recorded during the same period in the previous year, underscoring a sustained positive dynamic in the country's electronic money landscape.

This growth in web-merchants has been a key factor in the substantial rise of internet payment transactions. According to data from the Groupement d’intérêt économique de la monétique (GIE Monétique), the first half of 2026 saw 15,431,994 internet payment operations, marking a 52% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2025. The total value of these transactions reached nearly 346 billion dinars, demonstrating an exceptional 867% growth year-on-year. This rapid expansion is primarily attributed to initiatives aimed at developing electronic payment methods, which have successfully improved accessibility for merchants to the dedicated platform.

The remarkable surge in the value of online transactions is further explained by the successful integration of electronic payment options for various essential services and programs. These include the settlement of installments for the AADL 3 program, payment of Hajj fees, and the purchase of Eid Al-Adha sheep, illustrating the broad adoption and practical application of digital financial solutions within Algerian society. This trend of digitalization is consistent with the broader picture of electronic payments in Algeria, which recorded a strong annual growth, reaching 939 billion dinars in 2025, a 46% increase over the preceding year, further solidifying the country's advancements in financial digitalization.
