Algeria Commences Public Transport Fleet Modernization

Algeria has initiated a comprehensive national program to modernize its public transport fleet, marking a significant step towards enhancing public services across the country. The operational phase of this renewal sees wilaya transport directorates beginning the progressive withdrawal of buses aged 30 years or more, specifically those registered up to 1996. This strategic move, which follows instructions from Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, to accelerate the fleet renewal program, aims to enable operators to replace these older vehicles with modern alternatives.

To ensure a smooth transition and support transport operators, the Algerian state is providing substantial financial assistance. This includes a contribution of 20% towards the price of a new bus, coupled with exemptions from customs duties and Value Added Tax (VAT). Furthermore, the remaining cost can be managed through monthly payments spanning up to ten years, under specified conditions. This comprehensive financial framework is designed to alleviate the economic burden on operators, facilitating their investment in new, more efficient vehicles.

The implementation process requires operators to submit a dossier to their respective wilaya transport directorates, including original exploitation decisions and vehicle registration certificates for buses slated for retirement. Upon registration, an initial attestation is issued, allowing the operator to deposit the old bus with the National Society for Recovery and Valorization (SNRV). A second attestation, granted after confirmation of the vehicle's deposit, then paves the way for the acquisition of a replacement bus. This extensive program extends beyond passenger transport, encompassing vehicles used for school, university, and personnel transport, signifying a broad national commitment to upgrading Algeria's entire public transport infrastructure.
