Presidential Decisions Underpin Algeria’s Stable Water Supply, Minister Affirms

Algeria's Minister of Water, Lounas Bouzegza, has praised the decisions made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, asserting that they have been instrumental in establishing stability in the nation's water supply. Speaking to Ennahar TV, Minister Bouzegza highlighted that the country had previously faced a critical situation regarding water resources, and the President's vision provided alternative solutions to overcome these challenges and ensure a consistent provision of water.

The strategic framework introduced by the President involved key initiatives to bolster water security. Among these are the significant project for seawater desalination plants and the program for reusing and recycling treated wastewater, particularly for agricultural and economic purposes. These measures, according to the Minister, have been pivotal in achieving the current stability and are driving continuous improvement in the availability of water resources across Algeria.

Algeria is now recognized as a model in seawater desalination, a testament to its advanced capabilities. The nation currently produces 3.6 million cubic meters of desalinated water daily, fulfilling 40 percent of its citizens' needs, with projections to reach 62 percent coverage by 2029. Furthermore, the management of these vital desalination plants is expertly handled by Algerian professionals, underscoring the country's national capacity and technical independence in this crucial sector. The country also maintains a robust water infrastructure, currently operating 82 dams, with an additional five under construction.
