Banque d’Algérie Directs Banks to Accelerate and Digitize Consumer Credit for Local Products

The Banque d'Algérie has issued a firm directive to all banks and financial institutions operating in Algeria, urging them to significantly enhance and expedite consumer credit offerings. This move is aimed at broadening access for Algerian households to financing while simultaneously providing a substantial boost to national production. The central bank's instruction specifically calls for the development of diverse and accessible credit products, underscoring their crucial role in supporting household purchasing power and stimulating local industry.
The directive outlines several concrete obligations for financial institutions, including mobilizing necessary resources to improve client access to consumer financing and ensuring swift and efficient processing of credit applications. A key element of this strategic push is the mandate to generalize the use of digital distribution channels, such as online banking and mobile applications, to streamline the application process and address administrative burdens. Importantly, the Banque d'Algérie reiterated that consumer credit remains strictly reserved for the acquisition of goods produced or assembled within Algeria, a foundational rule reaffirmed since its re-establishment in 2015, ensuring direct support for the domestic manufacturing sector.
This comprehensive measure comes amid a persistent context of under-banking among households in Algeria, where approximately 86% of families are currently without access to bank financing. By focusing on rapid and rigorous processing, particularly through digital transformation, the Banque d'Algérie aims to overcome existing barriers and integrate a larger segment of the population into the formal financial system. The directive emphasizes immediate implementation across all banking agency networks, signaling a strong commitment from financial authorities to leverage consumer credit as a vital engine for economic growth in the coming period.
