Algeria Leverages Mineral Wealth for Strategic Industrial Growth and Energy Transition

Algerian authorities have outlined a national mining strategy aimed at leveraging the country's extensive mineral resources to bolster industrial development and support the energy transition. This comprehensive approach seeks to expand the production of economically significant industrial materials, such as barytine, diatomite, and dolomite, as part of an integrated mineral system designed to valorize Algeria's diverse wealth. The strategy underscores a commitment to broadening the nation's mineral resource base, fostering local industries, reducing reliance on imports, and opening new avenues for investment and domestic production, thereby establishing a more diversified mineral value chain within a productive economic framework.

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Industry highlights specific initiatives under this strategy. Noteworthy projects include the extraction and production of barytine in Medea province, targeting an annual capacity of 100,000 tons with operations scheduled to commence in 2028. Similarly, a diatomite extraction project in Sig, Mascara province, is set to begin operations in 2028 with an estimated annual production of 25,000 tons. Furthermore, a dolomite processing plant in Oum El Bouaghi province, boasting a production capacity of 100,000 tons annually, became operational during the first half of the current year.

Beyond industrial minerals, the strategy also focuses on strategic minerals vital for the energy transition. Efforts are currently underway to identify lithium resources in the Hoggar region, specifically within In Guezzam and Tamanrasset provinces, as part of the 2026-2028 mining research program. The Ministry views the mining sector in Algeria as undergoing a foundational transformation, positioning it to become a substantial economic pillar in the medium term. This transformation involves meeting deadlines for structural projects, ensuring efficient operations, prioritizing industrial processing over raw material export, strengthening sectoral governance, stabilizing the regulatory environment to attract technological partnerships, and developing specialized human competencies to manage this intricate system. The success of these initiatives is expected to integrate the mining sector as a crucial component of the national economy, serving as a sustainable engine for growth and wealth generation beyond hydrocarbons.
