Mosta-ghanem: Opening of the 55th National Amateur Theater Festival

Mosta-ghanem – The 55th edition of the National Amateur Theater Festival kicked off on Sunday evening in the city of Mosta-ghanem, featuring 26 amateur theater troupes, including 8 competing troupes.

The official opening of this cultural event took place at the Dar El Culture Ould Abderrahmane Kaki, attended by local authorities, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Algeria, Mr. Fayez Abu Eita, numerous theater artists from various provinces of the country, and a large audience of theater enthusiasts.

In her opening speech, read on her behalf by Mr. Ismail Inzarn, Minister of Culture and Arts, Ms. Soraya Mologi, stated, “Theater is the father of arts and the most expressive means used by humans to convey artistic messages that carry human values, especially the principles of truth, freedom, and social justice.”

The Minister added, “Efforts and visions converge to create a theatrical culture with humanistic and educational dimensions, based on communication, harmony, and creativity from the perspective of our Algerian identity, symbolizing our national existence.”

The Minister further noted that “the successive editions of this festival ensure its continuity and pave the way for its prominence and excellence, working towards developmental goals with a forward-looking approach.” She emphasized that the 55th edition affirms “continuity, stability, and the diligent efforts of the sector to empower youth and support creative individuals as the cornerstone of the new Algeria.”

During the opening ceremony, the Mouja Theater Association performed an excerpt from the play “Diwan El Qaragoz” by the late playwright Ould Abderrahmane Kaki. Additionally, young people who received theatrical training over the past year took the stage to present an artistic and theatrical piece showcasing several scenes from the works of this prominent figure in national theater.

The evening also featured a tribute to theater and film artist, and founder of the Mouja Theater, Djilali Boujemaa, in recognition of his significant artistic contributions to the national theater scene, honoring his career spanning over four decades.

Eight amateur theater troupes (Category A) from the provinces of Mosta-ghanem, Oran, Sidi Bel Abbes, Tizi Ouzou, Khenchela, Boumerdes, and Relizane are competing in the 55th edition of the festival. Additionally, 18 theater troupes are participating outside the competition in Category B, as guests of honor, and in street theater and traditional theater performances (Qawwal and Maddah) held in various open spaces.

Moreover, several workshops will be organized in various specializations, such as scenography, dramatic writing, actor preparation, aesthetics, directing, and a national symposium on “Amateur Theater and Contemporary Artistic Experiences” on the upcoming Wednesday and Thursday.
