Algeria Advances Green Steel Production with China Baowu Partnership
Algeria's Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, recently held a pivotal meeting with a delegation from China Baowu Group, a leading global steel producer, to advance discussions on a strategic industrial and investment partnership. The focus of the discussions, which included Sonatrach CEO Nouredine Daoudi and representatives from the National Iron Company (SNS), was the establishment of an integrated complex in Algeria dedicated to producing low-carbon direct reduced iron and green steel. This initiative underscores Algeria's commitment to enhancing local manufacturing and maximizing the added value of its national resources through advanced industrial projects.
The proposed project is designed to leverage Algeria's considerable national energy resources, including natural gas and renewable energies, in conjunction with cutting-edge industrial technologies for decarbonization. This aims to foster a more sustainable and environmentally responsible industrial production landscape. During the meeting, China Baowu Group presented its extensive expertise in high-quality and green steel production, affirming its readiness to transfer modern technologies and technical know-how to Algeria. This transfer is crucial for the development of Algeria's low-carbon iron and steel sector and is expected to bolster the competitiveness of Algerian products in international markets, aligning with global environmental standards.
Minister Arkab emphasized the strategic importance of cultivating strong partnerships with major international industrial entities to facilitate technology localization, develop strategic industries, and boost local content. The discussions also explored potential collaboration with Sonatrach to support the new industrial ventures, ensuring the supply of natural gas, petroleum, petrochemical products, and raw materials, while also implementing industrial solutions for reducing carbon emissions in line with Algeria’s energy transition and sustainable development objectives. Furthermore, the revival and modernization of the El Hadjar steel complex in Annaba was highlighted as a strategic priority, positioning Algeria to harness its abundant mineral and energy resources, significant renewable energy potential, and strategic geographic location to become a key player in the global green steel value chains. While no contracts were immediately signed, both parties committed to ongoing consultations and technical studies to define a comprehensive roadmap for future cooperation and partnership opportunities.
