SU-30 Fighter Jets, Tanker Arrive in Niger as Algerian Aid

A high-level Algerian military delegation landed in Niamey on Sunday, August 30, following a contained mutiny at Air Base 101 in the Nigerien capital. The delegation was met with an unusually high-ranking reception, including Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, the Minister of National Defense, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, and other senior military and civilian officials. This visit underscores Algeria’s proactive engagement in addressing regional security concerns.

The arrival of the delegation was accompanied by the deployment of four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and an aerial refueling tanker, which also landed at Niamey airport. These assets were dispatched under the orders of General d’Armée Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army, as part of a mission to support the Nigerien army against attempts to destabilize the nation. Nigerien authorities have characterized this deployment as a demonstration of strategic support from the Algerian Armed Forces to their counterparts.

This military assistance is part of an increasingly active diplomatic relationship between Algeria and Niger, which share a significant border. The recent visit follows earlier military aid in August, when Algeria delivered four helicopters along with munitions and maintenance equipment to Niamey. Furthermore, Algerian Army Security services previously facilitated the transfer of a German national abducted on Nigerien soil, illustrating Algeria's ongoing role in regional security and stability efforts.
