South H2 Corridor Strategy Refined for September Algiers Summit

Algeria is accelerating its strategy to establish a prominent position in the global clean energy market. The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, recently convened officials in Algiers to oversee preparations for the upcoming international summit dedicated to the South H2 Corridor. Scheduled for September in the capital, this significant meeting follows earlier consultations held in Berlin last November, bringing together sectoral authorities from partner nations.

The summit will gather Energy Ministers from Italy, Germany, Austria, and Tunisia alongside the Algerian delegation to solidify this strategic alliance. During the preparatory discussions, Minister Adjal reviewed organizational files and provided specific guidance to ensure the event's success. The planned South H2 Corridor infrastructure is designed to span 3,300 kilometers, linking Algerian production sites to industrial centers in Germany, leveraging existing gas connections such as the Transmed gas pipeline through Tunisian territory.

This initiative targets an overall transit volume of 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year destined for Europe, with Algeria directly supplying 1.2 million tonnes of this total. Recognized by the European Commission as a priority initiative for decarbonizing the Mediterranean basin and Central Europe, this infrastructure project is set to reach a pivotal stage in Algiers. A key outcome of the summit will be the agreement among participants on the selection of sites for future large-scale production units.
