Niger Seeks Algerian Expertise for Natural Resource Development

Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine has expressed his country's strong interest in leveraging Algeria's diverse expertise for the exploitation of its natural resources. This declaration came as he led a delegation on Sunday, August 30, to receive four fighter jets provided by Algeria, marking a deepening of bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Zeine highlighted Niger's significant natural resources and affirmed that his nation "will certainly benefit from Algeria's expertise and experience in their implementation." He described a "feeling of relief" and appreciation for Algeria, referring to it as a "brotherly, friendly and neighboring country." The Prime Minister had previously visited Algiers for discussions with President Abdelmajid Tebboune, further underscoring the collaborative spirit.

This new dimension of economic cooperation builds upon a series of recent initiatives between the two nations. In June 2026, Algeria fully financed and inaugurated a 40 MW power plant in Gourou Banda, Niamey, designed to enhance Niger's energy supply. Furthermore, in August 2026, Algeria provided Niger with four helicopters, including two MI 171 and two MI 24 models. These gestures collectively underscore a period of warming relations and expanding cooperation between Algiers and Niamey, benefiting the populations of both countries.
