Nigerien Leadership Thanks Algiers for Military Support

Algeria has dispatched four Sukhoi Su-30 combat aircraft and an Il-78 refueling tanker to Niger. This deployment, executed under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, came in response to a request from the Nigerien command. The military aid aims to support the Nigerien army in confronting attempts to destabilize the capital, Niamey, following a recent coup attempt. This latest military assistance builds upon previous support, which included four helicopters—two Mi-24V and two Mi-171—along with munitions, spare parts, and maintenance equipment, delivered by Algeria weeks prior on August 9.

Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine expressed profound gratitude on behalf of President Abdourahamane Tiani and the Nigerien leadership for Algeria's timely intervention. Zeine underscored that Algeria's swift response demonstrates its significant concern for Nigerien security, emphasizing that assisting Niger in safeguarding its security and sovereignty is considered an absolute priority for Algeria. President Tiani further assured President Tebboune that the situation in Niger was under full control, thanking Algeria for its unwavering solidarity and support during this sensitive period.

Nigerien media outlets, including Echos du Niger and Niger Diaspora, have acknowledged Algeria as an increasingly important security partner in the region. They noted that the simultaneous deployment of combat, transport, and refueling aircraft lent a more significant operational dimension to this mission compared to previous military equipment movements between the two nations. This strategic cooperation signifies a new stage in the defense rapprochement between Niamey and Algiers, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening solidarity and effectively addressing regional security challenges. For Niger, this partnership is seen as crucial for national territorial defense, preserving sovereignty, and fostering a future founded on peace and stability.
