Berlin Targets Algerian Gas for Storage, Green Hydrogen Ventures
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently visited Algiers for discussions with State Minister and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab, focusing on enhancing the strategic energy partnership between the two nations. The high-level meeting underscored Algeria's pivotal role as a reliable energy supplier for Europe, building on the positive momentum in bilateral relations established during President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's official visit to Berlin in July 2026.
During the talks, Germany expressed a clear interest in diversifying its energy sources and securing long-term gas supply contracts from Algeria. Foreign Minister Wadephul specifically noted Algeria's potential to assist in filling Germany's gas storage facilities. The discussions also encompassed broader energy sector cooperation, including the modernization of the oil and gas industry, development of petrochemicals, and the adoption of low-carbon technologies.
A significant portion of the dialogue centered on expanding collaboration in renewable energies, particularly the production and marketing of green hydrogen and green ammonia. Both parties explored developing related equipment, such as electrolyzers, alongside initiatives for methane emission reduction and recovery. Minister Arkab invited German companies, including those represented in the accompanying delegation like Siemens Energy and Bosch Energy, to actively participate in the "Algeria Bid Round 2026," highlighting opportunities for joint projects that incorporate advanced technologies and enhance local content.
The two sides affirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue and reinforced economic partnership, emphasizing the intensification of expertise exchange, technology transfer, and specialized training. This collaborative approach aims to foster sustainable industrial and energy development while concurrently working to reduce the carbon footprint, further solidifying Algeria's position in the global energy landscape.
