Germany Pursues Long-Term Gas Deals with Algeria
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently visited Algeria, engaging in discussions with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab. During his visit, Minister Wadephul emphasized Germany's interest in negotiating long-term gas contracts, highlighting Algeria as a reliable partner essential for diversifying Germany's energy sources. This collaboration is particularly significant as Germany's current gas storage levels are notably lower than in previous years, standing at 53% compared to over 70% a year ago, underscoring the pressing need to secure stable supplies ahead of the upcoming winter.
This renewed interest builds upon existing cooperation, including a new gas supply contract signed in July between Germany's VNG and Algeria's Sonatrach, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2027. Both nations also affirmed their commitment in July to deepening their energy partnership, expressing interest in increasing gas supplies and advancing the "Southern Hydrogen Corridor" project, which focuses on green hydrogen development. Algeria holds substantial strategic importance as a major energy supplier to the European Union, particularly to Italy and Spain, possessing approximately 4.5 trillion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves and producing around 1 million barrels of crude oil daily, including high-quality Saharan crude.
Algeria's geographical proximity to European markets and its well-established export infrastructure, encompassing pipelines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) networks, significantly enhance its capability to respond effectively to evolving European energy demand. Beyond energy, the discussions during the German delegation's visit also encompassed regional and international issues, including the situation in the Sahel region and broader challenges in the Middle East. This reflects a comprehensive deepening of bilateral and European Union-level cooperation with Algeria, extending beyond energy to broader diplomatic engagement.
