German Foreign Minister Wadephul Meets President Tebboune on Energy, Investment

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently received German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his accompanying delegation in Algiers. The meeting included several high-ranking Algerian officials, such as Minister of State Brahim Merad, Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf, Presidential Advisor Amar Abba, and Algeria's Ambassador to Germany Larbi Latrèche. This high-level engagement signals an entry into a new phase of robust cooperation between Algeria and Germany, building on their strategic partnership.
Germany has expressed a clear interest in securing long-term gas import contracts from Algeria, aiming to diversify its energy sources and bolster supply security amidst global market pressures. Foreign Minister Wadephul stated his country's need for diversified supplies and hoped to secure a portion of Germany's gas requirements from Algeria, referencing Algeria's existing gas agreements with Italy and Spain. Beyond energy, discussions underscored a broader economic partnership, encompassing investment, industry, renewable energy, and pharmaceutical sectors, reflecting the outcomes of 31 agreements and memoranda signed during President Tebboune's visit to Germany in July.
The bilateral partnership is set to deepen through a "Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership" established in July, which outlines cooperation in energy, economy, sustainable development, and innovation. A key project highlighted is the SoutH2 Corridor, an ambitious initiative designed to transport green hydrogen produced in Algeria to southern Germany via a 3300-kilometer pipeline across Tunisia, the Mediterranean, Italy, and Austria. This project, supported by the European Union, positions Algeria as a vital energy supplier for Europe's clean energy transition. Algerian officials have affirmed their readiness to facilitate German investment, encouraging participation in Algeria's upcoming bid rounds and leveraging German technological expertise to foster new industrial and technological ventures.
