The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has confirmed that thousands of Gaza Strip residents are at risk of famine, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid to be delivered to northern Gaza and for the blockade to be lifted, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The agency reported a statement from the society highlighting that aerial humanitarian aid has not met the necessary needs to reduce hunger rates. The statement called for the opening of crossings and the delivery of aid to all areas of Gaza, noting that Israeli occupation forces deliberately and continuously target relief teams.

An international report released on Tuesday warned of the continued high risk of famine across the Gaza Strip amid ongoing Israeli aggression and restrictions on humanitarian aid access. The report pointed out that over 96% of Gaza’s population (2.1 million people) face high levels of severe food insecurity.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report indicated that the entire Gaza Strip is classified as being in an emergency phase, the fourth stage in the classification system, just one step below famine (the fifth stage).

The same report stated that more than 495,000 people (22% of the population) are experiencing catastrophic levels of severe food insecurity in the fifth stage, where families face extreme food shortages, hunger, and depleted coping capacities.

The Israeli occupation continues its brutal aggression against the Gaza Strip despite two United Nations Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt the invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza, take measures to prevent acts of “genocide,” and improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
