62nd Independence and Youth Day Anniversary: Historical Artistic Performance “The Kiss of the Free” Presented at Algiers Opera

Algiers – The Algiers Opera “Boualem Bessaïh” hosted a historical artistic performance titled “The Kiss of the Free” on Thursday evening. This event, marking the 62nd anniversary of Independence and Youth Day, blended choreography, music, and digital audio-visual effects to depict various illuminating chapters of Algeria’s history and the enduring spirit of liberation among Algerians throughout the ages.

The performance was attended by Ibrahim Boughali, President of the People’s National Assembly, Omar Belhadj, President of the Constitutional Court, Boualem Boualem, Director of the Presidential Office, advisors to the President, Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Laid Rebiga, Minister of Culture and Arts, Soraya Mouloudji, other government members, representatives of national bodies and associations, as well as the revolutionary family. The event also welcomed Algeria’s guest, Minister of Veterans Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Bai Jingya, and his accompanying delegation.

In his speech before the performance, Minister Rebiga emphasized that the 62nd anniversary of Independence and Youth Day “has a special significance this year, with the entire society coming together to celebrate.” He added that “just as the people supported the revolution until independence, the revolution is theirs, and the independence is theirs,” highlighting that “Algerians always take pride in their historic achievements throughout their glorious history.”

The minister further stated that “Algeria is now entering a new phase, facing various challenges with renewed spirit and confidence in our abilities and resources.” He affirmed that “Algeria’s victories in its new era are thanks to its loyal men, strong constitutional institutions, foremost the National People’s Army, the successor of the National Liberation Army, and appreciation for all the security and regulatory forces that protect the nation.”

Minister Rebiga also noted that the participation of the Chinese Minister of Veterans Affairs in the Independence Day celebration “reminds us of China’s supportive stance during our liberation struggle, which is a testimony to the mutual support between our countries and the strategic partnership that has strengthened our historic ties for a promising bilateral future.”

“The Kiss of the Free,” produced by the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, celebrated Algeria’s history and resistance against invaders through nine scenes over nearly two hours. The performance featured vibrant and proud musical and theatrical tableaux showcasing the victories of Algerian resistance from ancient times to the outbreak of the Algerian Revolution on November 1, 1954.

The performance was distinguished by its theatrical, musical, and visual enjoyment, achieving a harmonious and technical spectacle through dance, song, and scenographic formations using the latest visual, digital, and hologram technologies. It emphasized the spirit of liberation among Algerians, the role of Algerian women during the revolution, and the resilience and struggle of the Algerian people.

Ahmed Rezzak, the designer and director of the work, highlighted that “this epic historical performance presents a mosaic of artistic genres that blend modernity with the rich and diverse Algerian artistic expressions. The focus was on the human dimension and the deep Algerian identity that characterized different historical periods, involving over 200 artists from various generations in theater, singing, and acting.”
