African Peer Review Mechanism Hears Algeria’s Pledge
Sofiane Chaïb, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for the national community abroad, participated via videoconference in the 41st ordinary session of the Committee of Focal Points of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) on Wednesday. During his intervention, Mr. Chaïb reaffirmed Algeria's steadfast commitment, in its capacity as a founding country and a member of the Mechanism's current tripartite presidency, to promoting APRM principles and achieving its objectives. This commitment extends to supporting the implementation of the strategic plan and enhancing the continental secretariat's effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate, aligning with the African Union's Agenda 2063.
The session focused on monitoring the implementation of recommendations from the 35th Forum of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa in February 2026. A key part of the agenda involved adopting the conclusions of the 40th session of the Committee of Focal Points, which Algeria notably chaired in January 2026. This earlier session was crucial in defining the action plan priorities for the current year, particularly stressing the need to translate decisions into concrete measures and to strengthen governance evaluation mechanisms within member states, underscoring their central role in promoting good governance across the continent.
Mr. Chaïb also commended the progress made in bolstering the Mechanism's contribution to conflict prevention, acknowledging the interconnectedness of governance, stability, and lasting peace. He specifically welcomed the adoption of the report related to the reference framework for the African Early Warning and Conflict Prevention Mechanism, which had been approved by the AU Peace and Security Council in August under Algeria's presidency. Furthermore, he called for the continued activation of this initiative, with an upcoming technical workshop planned to be organized by the continental secretariat in Algeria in the coming months. The Committee also addressed thematic reports concerning the Mechanism's performance and youth engagement in governance, alongside monitoring efforts to establish an African credit rating agency aimed at enhancing the continent's economic and financial resilience.
