Bangladesh Negotiates Up to Ten Algerian LNG Tankers Annually

Algeria's national hydrocarbons company, Sonatrach, is engaged in negotiations with Bangladesh for the potential supply of up to ten annual cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This development follows a high-level meeting held on September 10 between Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Bangladesh's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmood. Officials from Sonatrach and Bangladeshi state-owned energy companies, including Petrobangla, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, and Rupantarita Prakrit Gas Company Limited, also participated in discussions aimed at laying the groundwork for an expanded energy partnership.

This initiative represents a strategic international pivot for Algeria amid global energy market fluctuations. For Sonatrach, the discussions with Asian economies like Bangladesh offer a significant opportunity to rebalance its commercial portfolio. By diversifying its export destinations, Algeria seeks to reduce its reliance on historical clients primarily located in Southern Europe and to arbitrate its exports towards markets that offer more favorable net valuations for its gas resources.

The interest from Bangladesh highlights a broader trend in Asia, where nations are actively seeking to bolster their energy security and reduce vulnerability to disruptions in established maritime routes.
