Foreign Minister Attaf Affirms UN Western Sahara Mediation Support

Algeria has reaffirmed its readiness to support any United Nations-led mediation initiative between the Polisario Front and Morocco to resolve the Western Sahara conflict. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated that Algeria would "spare no effort" to back such an initiative, provided it operates within the UN framework. This commitment underscores Algeria's consistent support for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people, aiming for a just, lasting, and definitive solution consistent with UN resolutions.

Minister Attaf further clarified Algeria's perspective on the recent UN Security Council resolution, asserting that it secured "major achievements" for the Polisario Front, bolstering its position on a strong foundation fully rooted in international legality. He specifically highlighted that Morocco's autonomy plan was not designated as the "sole basis of negotiations" within the resolution.

Another significant achievement, according to Minister Attaf, was the renewal for one year of the mandate for the United Nations Mission for the Organization of a Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). He emphasized that the mission is explicitly tasked with organizing a self-determination referendum, as its name clearly indicates. The United Nations continues to consider Western Sahara a non-self-governing territory.
