Algerian Film “196 Meters” Wins Grand Prize at Rhode Island International Film Festival

The Algerian feature film “196 Meters,” directed by Chouaib Taleb Ben Diab, was awarded the Grand Prize at the 28th edition of the Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival in the United States on Sunday night.

According to Algerian radio reports, this prestigious award was secured in a competition that featured over 7,000 films from around the world.

The Ministry of Culture and Arts congratulated the film’s team through its official Facebook page, celebrating the achievement as a significant milestone for Algerian cinema. The ministry highlighted that this accolade reflects both the talent and capabilities of director Ben Diab and the ensemble cast involved in the film’s creation.

The film features performances from actors Nabil Asli, Hichem Mesbah, Mariem Meguenane, Shahrazad Karaachni, Ali Namous, Aziz Boukrouni, Souad Sebki, Mohamed Frahmedi, Hamida Ait El Hadj, Mahfoud Berkan, Attallah Lahrach, among others.

“196 Meters” is a joint production between the Algerian Center for Cinema Development and Temple Production, with support from the Ministry of Culture and Arts. The Minister of Culture and Arts, Soraya Mouloudji, had inaugurated the film’s production on June 6, 2022, and it is expected to premiere in Algeria later this August.
