Dhaka Seeks Wider Partnership with Algeria in Key Sectors
On Sunday, September 20, 2026, Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saïdani held separate meetings with Bangladesh State Ministers for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and Shama Obaed Islam in Dhaka. During these discussions, Bangladesh sought Algeria's enhanced cooperation in ensuring its long-term energy security and contributing to food security through the supply of fertilizers.
Beyond immediate security concerns, both nations discussed broader avenues for strengthening cooperation across various sectors. Bangladeshi officials proposed increased collaboration in trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and the shipbuilding and construction industries. State Minister Shama Obaed Islam specifically requested Algeria consider importing more eco-friendly jute and jute products from Bangladesh. Discussions also touched upon combating climate change impacts, youth and sports initiatives, and joint cultural exchanges.
Ambassador Saïdani responded positively, reaffirming Algeria's commitment to elevating the existing bilateral relationship. He indicated Algeria's readiness to cooperate further in areas including energy, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, shipbuilding, and establishing maritime shipping lines. The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of high-level visit exchanges and strengthened sports and cultural ties to deepen the partnership between the two countries. Algeria, a prominent global LNG exporter, was noted for its significant gas export capacity, ranked sixth worldwide in September 2025 with an estimated 25.3 million tons of LNG supply capability.
